This morning I packed up, after unpacking from New Orleans only hours earlier, and headed into work. I met Ann and Kathy. There were multiple messages and phone calls coming in as we were waiting to leave the office. With out non-retreat occurring all of the LSA offices would be closed, including the central call center. There was some miscommunication about whether there would be a skeleton staff working emergencies, but once we got to the retreat we learned that was not the case.
I had been playing phone tag with a Client who was being illegally evicted from her home. I finally got a hold of her this morning before leaving for the retreat, unfortunately there was nothing I could do for her until we got back to work on Thursday. It was difficult for me, heading to the beach for a retreat and knowing that any individual with civil legal issues in the state of Alabama would need to wait until Thursday. We put a note on the door and changed our voicemail message to indicate the LSA staff holiday. I got an encouraging message, after expressing this disappointment to a friend... I am at this retreat to learn how to better serve my clients. Yes a few individuals will be disadvantaged by the LSA 3 day hiatus but all of the attorneys and support staff will be back to the offices on Thursday with more knowledge and a bit more drive from an inspirational and informational retreat!
Today we had registration and time for lunch when we arrived. The retreat began at 1:00pm. At 1:15 we had a presentation from Jenny Schnitt about Generational Communication. I found it to be incredibly interesting. It helped me understand how to interpret and speak with not only Clients, but my co-workers and even my parents. After a short break I attended another discussion regarding Community Education and Outreach: A view From Across the State.
At 6:00pm we had our awards banquet "A Night to Remember" Today is the first day of three and I'm ready to keep learning how to better serve my clients.
