Day 102- November 19, 2010

Today I got some more flowers, this time they were birthday flowers from mom and dad.

It was a busy day. I learned we'd be changing our intake process until January 1, 2011. Already two of our admin are out of the office until after Thanksgiving, if not later. With that I've been helping with more adminstrative work, which has been great but I'm not really sure what I'm doing so It can be frustrating. I just got past the "asking questions ever five minutes stage" and now I'm back, but I know Kathy loves it! :) The attorneys in the office are trying to close out their cases by the end of the year so I'll also help follow up on stale cases and general follow up with clients whose cases are ready to be closed.

We have limited the amount of new cases we will take in the office. For example, we are no longer taking any domestic violence divorces unless the client is in an abuse shelter or in serious danger and the space in the shelter is very limited, so it has been incredibly difficult letting clients know we cannot help them. I have listened to them sob as a result or get anger and yell. It has been stressful and not a lot of fun, but after the 1st of the year it should get better.

Elizabeth, one of the Austin JVs, drove through Mobile and wanted us to meet her friend who is a current student at Spring Hill, the local Jesuit college. Emily, Andrew Vivian, and I chatted with the two of them after work before heading to Art Soup.

Art Soup is:
a one-of-kind fundraiser! Only at ARTsoup can you acquire original handcrafted artwork, dine on delectable soups created by renowned local chefs AND reach out to fellow Mobilians in need of assistance!

The event is a joint venture of Mobile artists and supportive citizens who have come together to craft a lively, artsy and delicious downtown fundraiser to support the essential and ongoing work of 15 Place - a downtown
multi-service center daily assisting the homeless and the hungry of Mobile County.

Downtown Mobile is the setting for the evening of art, cuisine and compassion. Patrons will gather together at Christ Church Cathedral, select from among the 300 hand-crafted soup bowls created by local artists and dine on hot soups, crusty breads, delicious desserts and cold beverages. Live music will add momentum to the night.

Individual tickets are available for $40.00 and tables seating six or eight are available for purchase. The event takes place Friday, November 19, 2010, 6 – 9 pm. This is National Hunger and Homelessness Week and is also the week before Thanksgiving. ARTsoup will be a fun night out and a way to share with those who are less fortunate.

Art Soup was a great event. Megan works at 15 Place so we were there for her to boss around, which she loves to do! We had to collect ticket, call in credit card orders, and help with checkout for the silent auction items. We each got a bowl for volunteering. It was great to see the constant stream of patrons for the event and know that all the funds are going to such a great cause!

November is Prematurity Awareness Month

More than half a million babies are born too soon each year.
