Here is Mary P's description from her monthly e-mail:
The next big event was Mobile's annual homeless census. Our community signed up and was assigned the downtown area, and for one night we walked around and interview individuals who were homeless, trying to get some demographic to assist with funding and services. Since some of my roommates work with the homeless and impoverished, and since my work at L'Arche often seems in contrast to what they speak of, I enjoyed getting a glimpse into this issue. Although I have had some experience with this before, that night shed more light on how prejudiced society is against these people, yet how many reasons there are that they end up in these circumstances. Definitely humbling to know that the walls we imagine separate us from another are not so strong and tall as we may believe. - Mary P.
Here is the Thank You e-mail we got for conducting the interviews:
Subject: Thank you for you help with The Point-In-Time Count
Dear Volunteers of the 2011 Point-In-Time Count:
I want to personally thank each of you for giving of yourself and of your time to participate in this project. This years count would not have happened without your support and dedication. We sincerely hope that this was a positive experience that opened your hearts and minds to the great need in this city. Each homeless individual and family deserves and desires our support and understanding. This count will help provide that through the federal grants will get be applied for. With those funds, each agency that serves the homeless will be able to serve more effectively.
I look forward to seeing each of you again during the 2012 Point-In-Time Count.
Blessings and thanks- Alice Corkern
